Many who sit with the mushroom speak of meeting something wise: a presence that seems to know what we need before we do. This work is held in that spirit. The medicine is not a product or a quick fix. It is a living relationship, far older than any of us, and worthy of our deepest awe.
My journeys have each been different. Some have been intense, revealing me to myself without filters, meeting all of who I am in full glory. Others have felt like a birth, where an old self and a new self met and a new me emerged, and I felt deeply witnessed and held. Some have moved through me as a vast, seismic somatic release, my body shaking, shivering, moving and writhing as it let go. And some have been soft, gentle and joyous: an opening into oneness, where I felt the cosmic field as pure love, and it was as if all the goodness and peace in the world had entered my being, so that I could carry that vibration back out into the world.
I have found that surrendering to the medicine, and gently relinquishing control, is where the magic happens. The medicine turns me inward, gently showing me the places within that I may have been taught not to look, and what no longer serves me. I have come to know the mushroom as a teacher, helping me remember my own unique expression, free from the weight of judgement. When I could stay present within the journey, it offered insight and quiet knowings that I've carried forward into my life, along with a renewed devotion to what matters most to me, in body, mind and heart.
My most transformational journeys have been those where I was held by an experienced, trauma-informed and heart-centred facilitator. With them beside me, I could truly let go while still feeling tethered to this world, trusting they would help me orient and ground if and when I needed it, and support me with whatever arose.
I've learned that the deeper I'm willing to go in self-inquiry during preparation, the deeper I'm able to go in the journey itself.
Integration has been where much of the deeper work unfolds, and it is where I feel the most excitement for new growth. I come home with a softer, more open-hearted and intentional outlook, and making conscious changes feels essential to truly honour what the sacred medicine has shown me. Taking time to tend each journey has allowed insight and healing to keep unfolding long after it ended.
Afterwards, a sense of calm is almost always close at hand. My old patterns of control and ego soften, and it feels as though a clearing opens, making room for more goodness and peace to shape my life, my relationships with my loved ones and my place in the wider community.
Sarah
Preparation is a practice of listening: to your body, to your intuition, and to what is quietly calling you.
The medicine meets each person differently. We don't chase an outcome. We make room for whatever wants to arise, and meet it with care.
We stand at the edge of something vast and mysterious, and let it humble us, open us and fill us with wonder.
We come with humility and gratitude, honouring the Mazatec and the many Indigenous peoples who have tended this relationship for generations.
Only you can know if and when this is right for you. There is never any pressure here. Your own inner knowing sets the pace.
Every path begins with listening.
The path Five stages
Oregon's psilocybin program is regulated by the Oregon Health Authority. Anyone aged 21 or over can take part, and there is no residency requirement. The journey itself happens at a licensed service centre with a licensed facilitator. We help you around it, and everything is shaped around who you are, what you're carrying and what you hope for. You can journey individually, as a couple or as part of a small group, always with one-to-one support alongside.
It begins with a free intro call. We get to know each other, talk through your hopes, health and timing, and see together whether this path feels right for you.
Book a free intro callIt starts with our heart-centred intake and medical checklist. In the months before, we meet as a group and one-to-one to work on intentions, health screening questions, expectations and what to do if things get hard.
I recommend trusted, licensed service centres and facilitators in Ashland that suit you, whether you journey individually, as a couple or with a group. You choose your centre and book and pay for your session directly with them. You also book your own flights and stay, and I share what to think about, including a calm buffer on either side.
You attend your required preparation session and administration session with an Oregon-licensed facilitator. We stay reachable for logistics and check-ins.
Back home, group circles and one-to-one sessions help you turn insight into change over the following weeks and months.
Held, as people have always been held.
Accompaniment
This is end-to-end care, from our very first conversation through to your integration at home. In many places, healing has never been something a person does by themselves. It happens within relationship, with others holding space, keeping watch and welcoming you home.
We come to know each other slowly. Your story, your hopes and your fears are received without judgement, and we prepare together at a pace that feels right for you.
I travel to Ashland and stay nearby through your time in Oregon, whether you journey alone, as a couple or in a small group, offering steady presence, practical care and a familiar face. I am not present at your sessions. Your sessions are held by the licensed facilitators at the service centre you have chosen, and I can introduce you to them before you arrive, so you meet familiar faces. For group journeys, we gather for a shared potluck dinner at Jackson WellSprings before everyone heads home.
Coming home can be the most tender part. I remain beside you through the weeks that follow, and our private Telegram group keeps you connected with others who have journeyed, so that what opened can settle gently into your everyday life, your relationships and your community. Once our integration work is complete, I warmly encourage ongoing support through whichever therapeutic path resonates with you, whether energetic, somatic or talk therapy, or spiritual direction if you would like support in your spiritual life, to keep strengthening your healing.
I see my role not as a guide who knows the way, but as a companion who walks with you, with humility, gratitude and deep respect for the mushrooms and for the peoples who first held it.
I walk beside you, not ahead of you.
I walk alongside each person with warmth, presence and deep compassion.
I love to build deep rapport with each person I walk with. Through our time together in preparation, I help you arrive at your journey with a quiet mind and an open heart, so that sacred space feels easy to enter. Knowing you are truly seen brings reassurance, and that tender witnessing can help you soften and open to the experience, for your greatest good.
I'm trained in psilocybin facilitation, an Ancestral Regeneration Protocol Practitioner, and a GAPS (Gut and Psychology/Physiology) Coach. I hold this work with deep devotion, and I will always remain a humble student of this work, learning alongside every person I walk with. I believe lasting change involves the whole person: physical, mental, emotional and spiritual, along with our relationships and the story we tell about our lives.
My facilitator training was at the Leela School of Awakening in Ashland, Oregon, a program approved by the Oregon Health Authority. I am not an Oregon-licensed facilitator, and I do not facilitate psilocybin sessions. Leela teaches through heart-centred, experiential learning, combining trauma-informed care with self-inquiry, and that shapes how I help people prepare and integrate. I am deeply grateful, too, for the sisterhood and brotherhood of this medicine community: the teachers, facilitators and fellow travellers I have worked with, learned beside and learned from.
Alongside the inner work, I help people look after the physical foundations that support it: nourishment and nervous system regulation. This is coaching and education, not medical treatment.
I have journeyed with psilocybin in Oregon's licensed program myself, so I understand the process from the inside: how it works, what to expect, and what it asks of you. I have good relationships with licensed service centres in Oregon and connections to beautiful people in Ashland's facilitator community, which lets me recommend people I trust and support you with care, from your first conversation to your time in Ashland and the weeks of integration afterwards. Sessions take place at a licensed Oregon service centre with licensed facilitators.
My own journeys also led me home to ancestral nourishment and ancestral ways of living. I came to see how far our modern way of eating and living has drifted from what our bodies and minds were designed for. When we offer our physiology what it truly needs, food that is whole, natural and right for our species, along with sunlight, movement, rest and real connection, it can move out of a state of defence and into one of repair and thriving. Our ancestors, and some traditional communities still living today, show us how vibrant human health can be, with far fewer of the chronic physical and mental health struggles so common in modern life. The way back is beautifully simple, though not always easy. I am a curious and humble apprentice of all things healthy and human, and I now feel called to learn more deeply into the energetic side of life, including energetics and frequency healing.
I'm also a mum to two teenage girls. Motherhood has shaped me more deeply than anything else. I haven't always followed the conventional ways of parenting. I've forged my own path, and it hasn't always been easy. We are an unschooling family, and that way of living, trusting each person's innate curiosity, timing and inner knowing, has carried us through life in a beautifully profound way. Along the way, I have been held by a beautiful sisterhood of unschooling mothers, women who have walked beside me, shared the hard days and the joyful ones, and reminded me that we were never meant to do this alone. It has taught me to listen beneath the surface, to my children and to my own deepest truth, and from that listening a quieter wisdom has slowly emerged. It is this wisdom, along with the patience and warmth motherhood asks of us, that I bring to this work.
I work with people in Aotearoa New Zealand, Australia and around the world, and I know what a big step it is to travel across the globe for something this personal.
Honouring the roots of this medicine
This sacred medicine has deep ancestral roots. For centuries, Mazatec and other Indigenous peoples of Mexico have held the mushrooms within their own healing traditions. María Sabina, a Mazatec sabia (wise woman) from Huautla de Jiménez in Oaxaca, called them niños santos, the holy children. In 1955 she welcomed an American visitor into one of her healing ceremonies. The attention that followed brought great hardship to her and her community, and she later came to regret it.
I honour María Sabina and the Mazatec people, and the many Indigenous communities who have carried this knowledge. I do not offer or imitate Indigenous ceremony. My work is preparation, integration and care alongside Oregon's licensed program, and I hold this work with humility, gratitude and respect.
Reverence for the medicine begins with reverence for you.
How I hold this work
When someone opens their inner world, they are trusting you with something precious. Care is not only kindness. It is a set of commitments, kept every time.
There is room in the circle for all of you.
A space for everyone
Whoever you are, whoever you love and wherever you come from, you will be met with warmth, respect and care.
Tend the soil before the seed.
Preparation and integration are offered separately from any psilocybin session. In Oregon, psilocybin is administered only by licensed facilitators at licensed service centres. This service does not provide medical or psychiatric treatment.
Modern Wild does not sell, supply or hold psilocybin.
What I offer is care: preparation, accompaniment and integration. Psilocybin itself is provided only within Oregon's licensed program, by licensed facilitators at a licensed service centre, where it can be held safely and lawfully.
The body is the first temple.
I support you as a whole person: physical, mental, emotional and spiritual. A journey is one moment in a much longer story. How you eat, sleep, move and rest shapes how you meet the experience and how well its insights take root. In the weeks before and after your trip, we look at the everyday things that support you.
Optional
If you would like it, I can offer nourishment support guided by my training as an Ancestral Nutrition Practitioner and GAPS Coach: realistic eating, with simple changes rather than rigid rules.
Our brains and bodies are built from what we give them. To meet their fullest potential, they thrive on:
When these foundations are in place, we often have more to give in every part of life: physical energy and repair, mental clarity, emotional steadiness, and a spiritual openness to meet whatever arises.
Living in tune with the natural rhythm of day and night: morning light, gentle evenings, darkness for sleep and regular waking times. This matters all the more when crossing time zones, so we plan a calm rhythm for the days around your travel.
Grounding, breathing and gentle practices to help you feel safe and settled before, during your travels and after. A few to try at home:
Simple ways to come back into your body and onto the earth: bare feet on grass or sand, slow walks, resting against a tree or the ocean's edge. Many people find these moments steadying, especially in the tender days after a journey.
Healing is held in relationship. We look at the people, places and circles that nourish you, and how to strengthen connection with family, friends, community and the land, so that the changes you make are supported and lasting.
Movement, time in nature, caffeine, alcohol, screens, and the routines that help your changes last.
This is coaching and education, not medical advice.
Offered with care, so it can be within reach.
Support for journeying individually, as a couple or with a small group. Group circles offer shared connection, and your one-to-one sessions are curated to you. After our intro call, we shape your support around your needs, health, timing and intentions.
NZ$3,400
About US$1,900 per person. Groups of six to eight.
Hold your place with a NZ$650 deposit, then pay the balance in instalments, all settled six weeks before travel. Groups go ahead once six places are confirmed, and if a group does not go ahead, everything you have paid is refunded in full. Please wait until your group is confirmed before booking flights or accommodation. If you need to cancel, you will be refunded everything except your deposit up to six weeks before travel; after that, refunds are only possible if your place can be filled. If your group would like to share a house in Ashland to keep accommodation costs down, I can help arrange this where possible.
Your psilocybin session takes place at a licensed service centre in Ashland, Oregon. I recommend centres and facilitators I trust, based on your needs, the group and availability, and you choose, book and pay for your session directly with the centre. Individual, couples and small-group sessions are available.
The centre's licensed facilitators deliver the session. Their fee is paid directly to them and is separate from my package, and my discounts apply to my package only. I do not receive commissions, referral fees or any other benefit from service centres or facilitators.
Coming home is where the real work of integration begins, and no one should have to carry it alone. Everyone who journeys with Modern Wild is welcome to join our private Telegram group, where journeyers can stay connected, share what is unfolding, celebrate growth and support one another. For those living in and around Tāmaki Makaurau Auckland, there are also in-person meetups, a chance to reconnect face to face. It is held as a sacred space, and taking part is always optional.
Everyone agrees to keep what is shared within the group, to speak with respect and care, and to share only what they feel comfortable having others read. It is a place for peer support, not a substitute for medical or mental health care.

Many people who have been through this work feel a deep wish to give something back. The Pay It Forward fund lets you contribute any amount towards the preparation, accompaniment and integration of someone who could not otherwise afford it.
Every gift goes directly to supporting another person's journey, with priority for those who have the least access, including Indigenous people, BIPOC, veterans and people on low incomes. Gifts are anonymous unless you would like to be known.
Support from the fund covers my package only, not service centre fees or travel.
Every journey begins long before the destination.
Why journey abroad?
In Aotearoa and Australia, legal access to psilocybin is still very limited, and very costly. Some adults choose Oregon's licensed program instead.
Around NZ$9,000 to NZ$20,000
A full course of legal psilocybin treatment in New Zealand costs around NZ$9,000 to NZ$20,000, paid privately. Most of that is the clinicians' time for several weeks of therapy before and after the dosing day. Psilocybin can only be prescribed by a doctor with special approval from the Ministry of Health. As of mid-2026, just two doctors held that approval: a psychiatrist treating treatment-resistant depression, and an Auckland GP offering it in end-of-life care. Around ten private patients had been treated. There is no public funding.
Around A$20,000 to A$35,000
Since 2023, only psychiatrists given Authorised Prescriber status by the TGA can prescribe psilocybin, and only for treatment-resistant depression. A full course costs roughly A$20,000 to A$35,000 and is not covered by Medicare, and by mid-2026 only around 74 people had received it outside clinical trials.
From around US$1,000 a session
Any adult aged 21 or over can take part, without needing a diagnosis or referral, and there is no residency requirement. Oregon's services are not a medical treatment, so this is not a like-for-like comparison with prescribing at home.
Figures are approximate and drawn from public reports as of mid-2026. Service centre prices vary, and rules at home may change, so it is worth checking current details.
Clients arrange and book their own flights and accommodation. These are general pointers to help you plan.
Flights from Auckland or the east coast of Australia to Portland usually connect through the US west coast or Canada, and take about a day door to door. Build in time zone recovery before your sessions, not just after.
Most people plan roughly a week to ten days on the ground: arrive, rest, complete the preparation session, journey, then give yourself at least a quiet day or two before flying home.
Soaking in the awe of Oregon
Ashland sits in a green valley ringed by mountains, forest and mineral springs. In the days around your journey, time in nature is one of the gentlest ways to rest, regulate your nervous system and let what you have experienced settle.
Natural hot springs just outside Ashland, and the setting for our group potluck dinner before group journeyers head home, with a large pool of warm, geothermally heated mineral water, private soaking tubs, a sauna and peaceful gardens. A beautiful place to soften, float and simply be. Evenings are adults-only and swimwear-optional, so check times before you go. jacksonwellsprings.com

Psilocybin is only legal in this context when provided through Oregon's licensed system. It remains illegal under US federal law and in Aotearoa New Zealand and Australia outside tightly controlled medical settings. Never bring psilocybin into or out of the US, and never post it or carry it across a border.
Entering the US. Because psilocybin is illegal under US federal law, US border officers have wide discretion to refuse entry to people they believe intend to use it, and admitting past use can also affect your entry. Always answer truthfully: giving false information can lead to a permanent ban. Modern Wild cannot tell you what to say at the border. If you have any drug history, a past conviction or a previous refusal, get advice from a US immigration lawyer before booking anything.
For visitors in Australia. In Australia, psilocybin can only be prescribed by authorised psychiatrists, and it cannot be advertised or promoted to the public. Nothing on this site is directed at Australia or intended to promote the use or supply of psilocybin there. If you live in Australia and are thinking about psilocybin for a health reason, please speak with your doctor or an authorised psychiatrist.
What Modern Wild is, and is not. Modern Wild offers non-clinical coaching, education and travel support. Sarah Ryan is not a registered health practitioner, psychologist or psychotherapist, is not an Oregon-licensed facilitator, and does not diagnose or treat any condition. Modern Wild does not supply, sell, hold, administer or arrange the supply of psilocybin, does not take part in sessions, and receives no commissions or other benefits from service centres or facilitators. Any decision to use psilocybin services in Oregon is yours alone, and those services are provided by independent Oregon-licensed service centres and facilitators who are solely responsible for them. Please talk with your doctor about your health, and with an immigration professional about travel.
Psilocybin is not right for everyone. A personal or close family history of psychosis or bipolar disorder, certain medications (including lithium and some antidepressants), pregnancy and some heart conditions all need professional review. Licensed centres will screen you carefully.
Overall harm to users and to others, scored out of 100 by a panel of drug experts
| Drug | Harm score |
|---|---|
| Alcohol | 72 |
| Heroin | 55 |
| Crack cocaine | 54 |
| Methamphetamine | 33 |
| Cocaine | 27 |
| Tobacco | 26 |
| Cannabis | 20 |
| Ketamine | 15 |
| Ecstasy (MDMA) | 9 |
| LSD | 7 |
| Psilocybin mushrooms | 5 |
Low overall harm does not mean no risk. Psilocybin is physically very safe, but the experience can be psychologically intense, and the risks rise without screening, preparation and a safe setting. This is why supported, legal pathways matter.
If you are in crisis, contact local emergency services. In Aotearoa New Zealand call or text 1737, and in Australia call Lifeline on 13 11 14.
Every question is welcome here.
No. Oregon does not require residency. You must be 21 or older and complete the program's required steps.
No. I recommend trusted, licensed service centres in Ashland, and you choose, book and pay for your session directly with the centre. I take no commissions from centres. The session is delivered by the centre's licensed facilitators, and you can check their licences on the Oregon Health Authority's public list.
Always answer border officers truthfully. Psilocybin is illegal under US federal law, and border officers can refuse entry to people they believe intend to use it. Giving false information can lead to a permanent ban. I can't advise you on what to say. If you have any drug history or have ever been refused entry, please get advice from a US immigration lawyer before you book.
Costs depend on the service centre, session length and any extras. Expect the session fees to be a significant part of the trip budget, alongside flights and accommodation. Always confirm current prices directly with the provider.
